The Women’s Royal Air Force Hockey Squad Fly in for a week long hockey camp

This is the fifth consecutive year that The Royal Air Force (RAF) Ladies Hockey squad have based themselves in Gibraltar. The warmer climate, superb facilities and excellent hosting by The Gibraltar Hockey Association ensured the RAF had a successful time on the rock. The weeklong visit is part of the preseason training schedule ahead of their hockey season. The week is designed to be an intensive one of fitness and training sessions, with the Ladies training for approximately 3 hours per day on the pitch at The Victoria Stadium. This gave squad members the chance to develop their own individual skills as well as bonding as a team.
The RAF squad played in a seven aside tournament on the Monday night, narrowly winning the tournament. The other week nights saw full size 11 aside games against our three local sides, Eagles, Grammarians and Hawks. This gave the RAF an opportunity to try out squad members in different positions, evaluating which formations worked the best ahead of their first inter-services match back in the UK. It also gave the opportunity for our teams to play against a different side form those in the cup and league.
On Thursday last week, the RAF delivered a training session to the Youth Development section of the Gibraltar Hockey Association (GHA). The children learnt a lot from the RAF coaching staff, engaged in a range of different activities aimed at challenging thinking as well as playing skills. The GHA would like to thank the RAF for the training session which was well received by all.
