Inter school Hockey Tournament 2017
Posted by David Devincenzi-Clemens on 11 May 2017
Monday to Wednesday of this week saw the annual middle schools hockey tournament with a difference – the competition was run only for years 6 and 7. With several schools entering more than one team, numbers were still high. Another difference was that Wednesday was a semi finals and finals day for both girls and boys which added to an exciting first two days.
The girls’ competition was won by St Anne’s Red defeating St Josephs 3-1. These two teams had beaten Bishop Fitzgerald and Loreto Black in their semi finals respectively. Some excellent match play with many talented youngsters who still have a few more years of middle school left in which to battle for the title again. Loreto Black took third place.
Top goal scorers were Cellene Griffin (St. Joseph’s), Beatriz Felipes (Loreto) and Mollie Karp (St. Anne’s).

The boys’ competition was of an extremely high standard, with many players putting on fantastic performances. This year the competition went right down to the wire. Bishop Fitzgerald Green and St. Annes Red had both qualified for the final, narrowly beating Loreto Black and St. Joseph’s in their respective semi finals. The final was full of entertainment. Great skills and terrific team play, defenders were really put to the test by two strong attacking sides. 2-0 down, Bishop Fitzgerald fought hard to come back to 2-2 on the stroke of full time. This brought the match to a penalty shoot out. In hockey terms, this is a one on one with 8 seconds to try and score. Bishop Fitzgerald triumphed in the last penalty but this match could very easily have gone the other way, such was the talent of both teams. Third place was won by Loreto Black.

All in all three days of excellent hockey together with a wonderful atmosphere. Full thanks must go to the teachers for giving up their time, the umpires, stadium staff, parents and of course all the children who made this tournament so successful. Well done to all!
