Gibraltar play against Dutch side Alecto

The third match in the space of a week for our Men's senior side was to prove the toughest test. Alecto, on a break from their season in Holland clearly came to the rock with a point to prove, having heard of Gibraltar good results the previous week.
Coach Zammit practically  had fully fit squad to choose from, save for striker Mark Casciaro who is still recovering from injury. Henwood, Lima and Eric Casciaro up front, Carl and Shane Ramagge were joined by Nick Pilcher in midfield and Lee Ramagge, Nicky Bourne, Kyle Thom and George Shacaluga made up the back line. Malcom head donned the pads in goal.

Alecto got off to a good start and instantly pinned Gibraltar back.  Clearly sharp from a weeks training camp they were spreading the ball around with confidence. A breakaway run and good cross from the left wing saw the striker tap in at the far post to give them an early 1-0 lead. This seemed to rattle our boys who took a while to recover. Zammit started making use of his bench and started rolling out the subs to give the more experienced players a breather. The youngsters who came on did extremely well and kept the score at 1-0.

With more subs rolling in and out Gib were finding it hard to get any sort of rhythm going, Alecto pounced and scored two goals in quick succession.  It looked like it was going to be a long day for Gibraltar at this point.  However, if there is one thing Zammit's teams don't do is give up, and credit to Gib they kept pushing. Their play was rewarded when Lee Ramagge took a quick free hit and found Gareth Henwood in space in the D to deflect the ball home. The goal energised Gib who pushed on and got their rewards soon after when some great combinations saw Eric Casciaro reverse the ball to Lee Ramagge at the far post who made no mistake to make it 2-3.  Alecto were in trouble and praying for the half time whistle which came soon after.

The second half was a real spectacle of hockey and an end to end affair.

Both teams having chances and giving it their all, it was Alecto who raced into a 5-2 lead with two well taken goals. Again, another team might have given up but not this Gib Side, they kept going and going and the evergreen Gareth Henwood took matters into his own own hands when he beat 4 defenders and hammered the ball past the keeper. It was game on again and Gib pushed for another, Henwood hit the post and the Alecto keeper made a few great saves. Gib were awarded a penalty córner late on and Carl Ramagge pounced on the rebound to make it 4-5 with only a few minutes left. Gib went hell for leather at the restart and sent all their men forward leaving their defenders exposed, Alecto managed to counterattack and took full advantage of the numbers to make it 6-4 and game over.

A truly enjoyable game of hockey and another good test for coach Zammit to see what his players a made of.
