This week Head Coach Christian Zammit commenced preparations for the European Nations Championships 3 to be held in Slovenia in July. His first move was to announce his management team. Clive Risso will take on the Team Manager role. Unlike in Football, this is a traditionally administrative role in Hockey. Clive's background as the GHA General Secretary make him an ideal candidate to fulfil this role, his assistance will be valuable in the build up to the tournament. Gareth Henwood has been appointed as Assistant Player Coach. Gareth has a wealth of experience having played hockey at the highest level and is a player who is widely considered as one of the best ever to wear the Gibraltar shirt. His experience will be vital for the younger players who still look up to him. Commenting on the appointments Zammit was said to be extremely pleased and is still looking to further strengthen his management team, watch this space for further announcements.
Future Plans.
The immediate preparations get underway with two matches announced this week against touring Dutch clubs. On Friday 10th @ 17:15 Gibraltar v Kikkers HC. On Saturday 11th @ 16:30 Gibraltar v Abcoude HC These matches against visiting sides are key preparation and will allow Zammit to asses his younger players ahead of selection for the tournament in June.
Looking further ahead the GHA is delighted to announce its Men's U16s and Development squad will be travelling to Loughborough University in early May for a training camp / tournament. This follows on from the successful visit of Grahame Mansell-Grace and will allow Coach Zammit to view and expose his players and in particular younger players to a tournament environment against top class opposition and in world class facilities.
More details will follow soon.
